Brentwood was changed and known as Modern Times. The Modern Times was a utopian colony which begun on March 21, 1851 founded by Josiah Warren and Stephen Pearl Andrews. The community was based in the idea of "individual sovereignty" meaning it was a politically independent without interference from outside. All products of labor were considered private property and all land was also a private property with the exception of alleys which were initially considered common property but later converted to private property. No system of authority existed in the colony. There were no courts, no jails, and no police; yet, there are no reports of any problem with crime existing there. However, the modest population of the colony might be considered a factor in this characteristic. The Civil War, as well as new residents that did not share the colony's philosophy, are said to have contributed to its eventual dissolution. In recent time, the area is now known as Brentwood with almost all original buildings in Modern Times destroyed, , aside from two Octagon houses, the original schoolhouse and a residence called Dame House, the designer was William Upham Dame who designed the house for economy of space.
